Patna Metro with 2 lines and 26 stations is an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) approved to be built in Patna, Bihar’s capital and largest city, by Patna Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (PMRCL).
Patna Metro’s 30.91 km Phase 1 project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared by RITES and approved by Bihar’s state government on February 9, 2016. On September 25 2018, the Bihar government approved the constitution of Patna Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (PMRCL) as the operator or special purpose vehicle for its implementation, which in turn appointed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as the General Consultant (GC) to assist with its implementation.
The project received the Central Government’s approval on February 6, 2019 and PM Modi laid its foundation stone on February 17, 2019. In November 2019, the DMRC unveiled a change in the project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) and alignment of both lines, leading to the creation of a second interchange at Khemni Chowk, elimination of Line-1’s depot at Aitwarpur and addition of 2 new stations.
The project is planned to be partly financed through an official development assistance (ODA) loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Construction for its 30.91 km first phase is expected to start in late-2020.

In 2011, Planning Commission of India under UPA Government approved the plan for a rapid transit system in Patna. Patna Metro Rail Corporation, a PPP entity, will look after the operations and functioning of the Patna Metro system. According to the proposed plans, the metro services will be available to the commuters in two corridors, and work will begin as public-private-partnership entity.
The Chief minister of Bihar Sri Nitish Kumar is hopeful of beginning the project as soon as possible, with the state government submitting detailed project report (DPR) according to the new guidelines issued by the Central Government. The Phase-I of proposed Patna Metro will cover 31 km distance from Mithapur Bus Stand to Saguna Mor via Bailey Road and Patna Junction, while the second phase will connect Patna Junction to bus stand at Bairiya via Ashok Rajpath, Gandhi Maidan and Rajendra Nagar.

Danapur-Mithapur corridor: The 16.94-km-long Danapur-Mithapur corridor that would connect the eastern parts of the city with the western parts will have 11 stations. Of these, three stations would be elevated, while the remaining eight would be underground. The Danapur Cantt-Mithapur corridor would pass through the heart of city and connect densely populated areas such as the Raza Bazar, the Secretariat, the High Court and the Law University Railway Station.
